As a group of high school and college students passionate about sustainable environment, A few of us were thrilled to take part in an unforgettable experience in December, 2023. Thanks to an ecotourism package offered by GlobalCoralition, we embarked on a journey to Sosua Beach for the PROTECTORS: CORALLINE PLANTATION SNORKELLING EXPERIENCE.
Our adventure began with an engaging educational workshop led by a marine scientist. We learned about coral reef ecology and the innovative Coral Farm project aimed at restoring the coral reefs of Sosua Bay. With excitement and curiosity, we listened as the scientist explained how technology is being utilized to conserve and protect these vital ecosystems.
During the workshop, we had the opportunity to get our hands dirty (or should we say wet?) by participating in coral-fragmentation planting. Guided by the expert, we carefully planted baby corals, knowing that our actions would contribute to the restoration of the reef's biodiversity.
After the educational session, we eagerly donned our snorkeling gear and dove into the crystal-clear waters of Sosua Bay. Swimming over rows of platforms housig baby corals in the nursery, we marveled at the sight of these delicate organisms and felt a sense of pride knowing that we had played a part in their journey back to the reef.
As we explored Atabey, the Mother of the Waters, deployed into the sea in 2022, we were struck by the intersection of nature, art and science. The innovative methods employed by the Coral Farm project showcased the power of human ingenuity in addressing environmental challenges.
Our experience at Sosua Beach left a lasting impression on us. Not only did we gain valuable insights into coral reef conservation and ecology, but we also witnessed firsthand the potential of technology to make a positive impact on our planet.
